It is one of the largest discoveries of its kind in the last 50 years.

A team of archaeologists discoveredhundreds of gold and silver coins from the 14th century in a forest near the Kladruby monastery, located in the historical Bohemian region of the Czech Republic. It is believed to be one of the largest treasures of coins found in the country, Milan Metlicka, from the Museum of West Bohemia in the city of Pilsen, told Radio Prague on Tuesday.

The treasurewas found by chance last March by a young couple who were walking in the area near the town of Stríbro.

«As they walked through the forest, they saw a few coins: two gold and one silver. They were probably unearthed by some forest animals, most likely wild boars«, Detailed the specialist.

Among the coins are gold ducats with the images of the Czech king and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, Albert VII of Austria Y Rupert of the Palatinate, as well as duchies of the Hanseatic city of Lubeck.

«Such a large treasure trove of gold coins is truly unique. No discovery of this type has been made in the country in the last 50 years"Metlicka stressed.

According to the archaeologist, it is difficult to express the value of the entire find in terms of money, but the face value of the gold coins, which weigh more than 325 grams, is at least 420,000 CZK (about $ 19,100).

«With silver coins it is more complicated, because they also contain copper, which reduced their value“Metlicka noted, adding that due to its historical importance it could bring its value to around 180,000 CZK (about $ 8,100).

The coins are expectedare on display at the West Bohemian Museum in Pilsen later this year or early next year, after they have been restored and cataloged.
